TABS - Scales and Chord Progressions Reference
 

If any of you musicians have come across tabs for any cool scales or chord progressions, POST EM! I'll try and find some cool ones, and write down some of my favs.

-I'll probably end up making this a sticky if it works out good.

Well I can't really contribute because I'm relatively new to guitar and am still working the the basics (major/minor), but sweet idea!

guitar pro has alota scales

any kind of guitar or bass exercises are cool... whatever you want to share!

I can scan in some basic Major scale exercises, but it's in notated not tab form.

Get the book.. "The guitar Grimoire." Great source of several scales & modes. Shows every posistion in every key.

whatever you want to add... even if its simple, I just figured we'd make our own reference here. I always like to learn some new sweep arpeggios.

Adam (Forbidden) has a couple of sweet exercises for working on string skipping/left hand work out stuff... not sure if I still have them or not.

Probably the most overrated and terrible book I've seen on theory. Not surprised you would recommend it.

Luke, I definitely trust your judgement... cause i know you lay down the shred. I was just wondering if you have any tips or books to refer us to?

All by Tommy Armstrong, a local Sacramento teacher based out of Skips Music. These are seriously the best. As for scales, I still haven't found any that I've liked which is why I went to a teacher. Monster Scales and Modes by Dave Celentano was decent and fairly concise, not sure if its still on the shelf these days. For those chord books though I'd give Skips Music a call and see if you can order them, or email them and get in touch with Tom. A student of mine recently mentioned CC 3 was out of print.

But anyways, the Guitar Grimoire is a joke. The guy who wrote that thing obviously intended to make it look like the most complex, difficult and painful instrument on the planet when its really supposed to be fun. :emot-cryi

The string skipping/alternate picking/left hand workout that Ronnie is talking about is as follows...Nothing extremely mind blowing but it works!

Obviously each finger plays it's own fret (I=6, M=7, R=8, P=9), and it anchors off the pinky just to make it harder since that seems to be everyone's weak point. I came up with this like a year ago, it's a great warmup and has done wonders for my alternate picking. Not exactly a scale or chord though, haha...

The pattern is really obvious when you start to play it, once you get it under your fingers it's just the right hand that you need to concentrate on...

Certain parts of that are damn hard for me. So I know it will help a lot.

Its a great book for under $20.

How is a book that goes over all major modes plus about 20+ other scales showing them in all positions and keys in an easy to read format for under $20 a joke? Its not the end all to end all book, but its a great place to start.

Yeah playing guitar is fun, to bad fucking cheese dicks such as your self make it into a competition.

Wow, I'm surprised to see someone else mentioning this book. I bought this book a long time ago. I thought it was decent at the time. It has pretty much all the regular known scales out there, plus tons of exotic scales.

The only thing I didn't like is that it only showed each scale drawn out on the fretboard in one key. So if you wanted to play the scale in a different key you either had to damn good with the scale and the ability to play it shifted up or down on the fretboard (which I was not and still am not) or you had to draw it out yourself on paper which is what I did. But the book would be probably 6 times thicker if all scales were drawn out in every key.

Here again, a decent book that was only like $20 or so.

Slighly different to all the finger exercises you can find, There's a couple of good interval trainers online. Great for developing the musical ear; the all important relative pitch.

Here is something I came up with this evening... pretty simple little arpeggio. If you were to sweep it, it might sound cool too. Since I'm not super gnarly I need to work up to that a bit.

'Ear Toner' seems the simplest one to use for single notes, some of the others get more technical.
Pretty boring compared to playing guitar, but quite helpful to improvisers when done for 5 minutes a day or something.

There are some very usefull exercises in there..

All the stuff he's calling string skipping is not string skipping though.

If anybody has anything just add it, doesn't matter how simple or whatever, just bust it.

Yeah, I thought string skipping was actually skipping a string, such as playing a note on string 6, and then the next note on string 4 (skipping string 5).

But anyways, the stuff dude posted is some awesome stuff to check out.

A sweep pattern I came up with the other day... It's nothing special, but it's fun to play and it sounds really good.

I would post a clip of me playing it, but I'm at home, sick, so my fingers are kind of like butter. :(

He did write this when he was still in high school. I'm sure he's since revised it. I've had it for a while.
In a sense he's my "guitar teacher" by sending me power tab shit through email.

Apart from the song transcriptions (some of which are very good), there's a lessons section (scale exercises etc.).
Again, there is some pretty good stuff in there if you take some time to find what you are looking for.

I love death metal, and can play a lot of what i hear, because I have close to perfect pitch, but I have always just learned by ear, and never learned any theory. I can rip through some Necrophagist songs, but i don't know the name of a single chord or scale, and when I mean I don't know scales, I mean the only scale I know of is the one that weighs pot. I know how to tune my guitar and about guitar tunings, but that's close to it. you think there are a lot of other people like me? or should i just have taken the time to learn this by now?

In any case thanks Defleshuary and Matt and everyone else for the scales, I will bookmark this thread, and check back here regularily.

Kinda off topic, but Matt, can you make an educational thread similar to this one about chords and scales, about the technical aspects of guitar and amplicifation? Not about recording equipment technical aspects, but there is a lot of technical terms people use when talking about various gate compressors, tube vs solid state... for years I worked on an amp which was the size of a shoebox, and limited to treble, mid, gain, and bass, and all i had to know was where to plug into to produce sound. I'd love to see a thread where people jut contributed their various tidbits of knowledge of pre-amps, rack mods, and all that other flashy technical stuff.

Thanks to all you guys who know your shit, and it's really cool that you guys can take gratification from helping people learn about things without any other reward than to help your fellow musician. Much respect.
