lose having to hit post reply before you can reply. that shit is booboo son!

siN 01-26-2012 03:15 AM

why don't you hit the 'quick reply' button on the right hand side? noob.

imbutawaveto 01-26-2012 04:36 AM

cause the text box is a much larger target, are you a n00b to laziness?!

ShadowHunter 01-26-2012 04:51 AM

+1 on bringing the old quick reply back. this shit sucks

PsychoNavigator 01-26-2012 05:42 AM

Some of the changes here I like, the skin is different and the fade in the profiles is cool.

Many of the suggestions are the same as was mentioned before in the other thread before the old database was recovered.

1. Put a donate button up. It's not always exactly cheap to run a site like this and there are some here who wouldn't mind throwing a couple dollars here and there. Granted, people are slackers and often promise shit they have no intention of delivering on, but then there are those who do see the value in supporting sites like this.

2. Like people said, bring back the text box at the bottom. More often than not the only time I use the quick post buttons is when I am replying via quote and multi-quote and it's fairly rare that I find a discussion that is deep and meaningful enough to quote for the sake of addressing its' finer points.

3. Throw more features in the text interface that will allow you to post video content. I think vB4 has a better integration, but if you're going to upgrade your software, as mentioned before, I'd highly encourage you to play with the Xenforo Demo. From what I understand, it is very easy to transition from one to the other.

4. This one may turn some people into massive sissy girls about but the multiple large gifs in sigs is distracting. Honestly, I'd limit it to a single file that is no more than 300px high x 1024px wide. If people want to use it to promote their bands or other site they should learn to make their images clickable, perhaps providing them with sample code to do where they are able to customize their sig.

5. Archiving & merging old subforums as well as pruning off old threads entirely. Here's how I'd put it together.
  1. General - (combine death to false zines and war & peace)
  2. Band Forums
  3. Label Forums
  4. Off-topic (cars/tech/porn/etc)
  5. Moderator forums (hidden from public)
  6. Site related (issues/requests/troubleshooting/etc.)
  7. Dead Zone (the place where shitty threads go to die a firey death, but just can't seem to be killed off.)

You could just disable the ability to look at other's sigs.

We could, and it's not my call, but the simple fact of the matter is that a user should be able to navigate the site by default with a relatively clean and controlled interface. No offense to you, because I do see that my suggestion does target your sig as well, but the animated gifs are too large and distract from the flow of discussion, just like when the posts were oriented with the user info on top of the posts just two days ago.

Seriously, would the idea of killing excessive graphics for a cleaner default browsing experience turn you off entirely from using this site? It's an honest question, if I appear to be coming across the wrong way.

User CP > Edit Options > Thread Display Options > unclick Show Signatures > Save Changes

But if I do that, I potentially miss out on useful links to a user's art/music page, website, or other social networking platform.

I'm sorry, I don't think that it should take having to bore down through my settings to create a visually cohesive browsing experience.

If your animated gifs are so intrinsically critical to define you and your content as a user, would you manually add them to the bottom of every one of your posts if you had no other choice?

All I'm getting from your sig is that you must have been a massive fan of Angelfire and Geocities and never really got over their demise.

Skeetsystem 01-26-2012 09:16 AM

Seconding the signature constraints.

PsychoNavigator 01-26-2012 05:03 PM

^^^^^

That's why I don't want to disable sigs. It's useful, personal to the poster and not an obnoxious reminder of why letting people customize their own myspace pages was always a bad idea.

Obswalq 01-26-2012 07:06 PM

what's with the reputation system? is this going to turn into a porn password board?

SiegeEngine 01-27-2012 02:28 PM

FUCK NO LIMITS ON SIG CONSTRAINTS

Block if you want. Other than that, signatures and the gifs/quotes that go with them provide half the entertainment here. Some people have obnoxiously large ones (DeProfundis and teapot come to mind) but it's worth it overall.

Also, it was mentioned in another thread that you would be pruning old forums, dead user accounts. The former is a good idea, the latter not so much. I for one have accounts on multiple boards (as well as some old gimmick accounts here) that I like havng access to if the need arises.

Otherwise, everything PsychoNavigator said. Minus the sig constraints.

siN 01-28-2012 01:50 PM

quick reply is back. will need to read more in-depth about the other changes and potential impact(s).

KEEP IT COMING!

siN 01-30-2012 04:10 AM

cleaning up the forums a wee bit...

working on some plugins possibly.

SiegeEngine 02-10-2012 01:06 PM

60 seconds in between searches seems excessive. Especially when looking for old posts/threads and you don't know exactly what string to search, it takes FOREVER.

Can we go back to 10 seconds in between?
