![]() A sweep pattern I came up with the other day... It's nothing special, but it's fun to play and it sounds really good. I would post a clip of me playing it, but I'm at home, sick, so my fingers are kind of like butter. :( |

He did write this when he was still in high school. I'm sure he's since revised it. I've had it for a while.
In a sense he's my "guitar teacher" by sending me power tab shit through email. I'll get more from him. |

Code:
-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------5----------6-------- --------5----------6--------------5-----------6--- (repeats) ----5-6---6---6-5---5----5-6---6---6-5----5------ ------------5----------6-------------------------- This is just something I made up to get better dexterity and finger independence. I use only the 3rd and 4th finger. |

for powertab users -- www.powertabs.net
Apart from the song transcriptions (some of which are very good), there's a lessons section (scale exercises etc.). Again, there is some pretty good stuff in there if you take some time to find what you are looking for. |

Thank you very much to everyone who has contributed in this thread, just practicing basic scales and learning them is helping me a lot.
I love death metal, and can play a lot of what i hear, because I have close to perfect pitch, but I have always just learned by ear, and never learned any theory. I can rip through some Necrophagist songs, but i don't know the name of a single chord or scale, and when I mean I don't know scales, I mean the only scale I know of is the one that weighs pot. I know how to tune my guitar and about guitar tunings, but that's close to it. you think there are a lot of other people like me? or should i just have taken the time to learn this by now? In any case thanks Defleshuary and Matt and everyone else for the scales, I will bookmark this thread, and check back here regularily. Kinda off topic, but Matt, can you make an educational thread similar to this one about chords and scales, about the technical aspects of guitar and amplicifation? Not about recording equipment technical aspects, but there is a lot of technical terms people use when talking about various gate compressors, tube vs solid state... for years I worked on an amp which was the size of a shoebox, and limited to treble, mid, gain, and bass, and all i had to know was where to plug into to produce sound. I'd love to see a thread where people jut contributed their various tidbits of knowledge of pre-amps, rack mods, and all that other flashy technical stuff. Thanks to all you guys who know your shit, and it's really cool that you guys can take gratification from helping people learn about things without any other reward than to help your fellow musician. Much respect. |

Personally I've played piano for a long time and I know all the basic scales and chords well enough, but I haven't bothered learning them on guitar yet. Although I can hear scales pretty easily so I think if I decided to it wouldn't be too hard to convert my knowledge from one instrument to the other.
I'm torn between wanting to improve my guitar playing ability, and wanting to stay more creative by not being restricted by conventions. And sometimes I feel like knowing all the rules will make me follow the rules. |

nothing too special but I always like using this as a quick warp up. pretty easy.
Code:
Gtr I |-------------------------------------------12-13-16-13-12--------------------------------------------| |----------------------------------12-13-15----------------15-13-12-----------------------------------| |----------------------------13-14----------------------------------14-13-----------------------------| |-------------------12-14-15----------------------------------------------15-14-12--------------------| |----------12-14-15----------------------------------------------------------------15-14-12-----------| |-12-13-16----------------------------------------------------------------------------------16-13-12--| |

If you play guitar, you are now officially required to read this for your own good, probably one of the best explanations I've come across: http://www.jazzguitar.be/files/the_b...chord_book.zip
And it has a lot more to do with than just jazz. TRUST ME. |

this is my FAVORITE warmup and I always do it, it's from Sugar Coated Sour by the Dillinger Escape Plan, enjoy... this one will build up your finger independence, sweep picking (at the end) and alternate picking quite nicely!
Code:
0:38 ~ e|---------------------------------------------------------------| B|---------------------------------------------------------------| G|-------------------------3-4-6-7-8-----------------------------| D|-----------------2-3-5-6---------------------------------------| A|---------1-2-4-5-----------------------------------------------| E|-0-1-3-4-------------------------------------------------------| PM--------------------------------- 0:40 e|-------------------------------6-8-7-9-5-----------------------| B|----------7-8-10-9-8-7-6-8-7-9---------------------------------| G|-7-8-10-9------------------------------------------------------| D|---------------------------------------------------------------| A|---------------------------------------------------------------| E|---------------------------------------------------------------| 0:43 T e|---------------------------------------------------------------------| B|------------7-10-9-8-5-6-----6/9--------------9h12-18p12p9-----------| G|----------8--------------7-------10--------10--------------10--------| D|--------9------------------9--------12--12--------------------12-9\6-| A|-7h9h10--------------------------------------------------------------| E|---------------------------------------------------------------------| |

Also, here's some NON-metal shit for you guys to work on, but I thnk learning this kind of shit is essential :D play this with a swing feel. (see: make all groups of two straight eigth notes into a dotted eighth followed by a 16th)
Code:
E :----------------|----8-------8-----7|*--8-*--------------| B :--------------9-|10----10---10------|--11-*--12--11--*---| G :----------------|-9----------8------|--10-*--11--10--*-14| D :----------------|10---------10------|--------11--10--*---| A :----------------|-8----------9------|--10-*--11--10--*---| E :----------------|-------------------|--------------------| E :---------12--*---------|-----------------|-8-8---------8-10--| B :---13-15----15-13--*---|--------7-----6--|------9-s10----10--| G :----*-14-------12-14-10|--------5-----7--|------8-s-9-----9--| D :------14-------12--*---|-10-----7-----8--|------7-s-8-----8--| A :-----------------------|-12-----6-----*--|-------------------| E :-----------------------|-----------------|-------------------| E :8---------------| B :8---------------| G :7---------------| D :7---------------| A :----------------| E :----------------| |
