those built in noise gates are pretty much just there to eliminate poweramp his. which they do. they aren't flexible enough to do your guitar>preamp feed back. that's where you get an external to hush that stuff out.

I feel at this point I shoul point out that the best noise gate in the world is getting your guitar control cavity shielded properly.

Honestly, from a personal standpoint, I have mixed feelings about Engls. They sound fantastic on recordings, but live, Powerballs end up pretty sterile-sounding. Invaders and Fireballs, however, sound way better in live settings. If Diezels were comparably priced, I'm pretty sure people would stop getting on Engl's dick, but that's a big 'if.'

Good question, IME the 150's are not as good as the 100's, the 100's are where it's at. It's like Triple Recs vs Dual Recs, 150W is just pointless, that's why Dual Recs are the "Mesa sound". The Invader 150's just don't have that punch that the 100's do.

Also, having tried a Diezel VH4S a while back and AB'ing it against a Dual Rec and even the Kerry King signature Marshall, the Diezel was completely underwhelming. I was very, very disappointed after hearing so many good things.

best amp i've ever tried was an SLO100, followed closely by a Mark Cameron Modded out Marshall JCM800, followed by a mates Bogner Uberschall, VHT Pittbull 50CL and the mighty Cornford MK50

Diezels are WAY down there, (bar the Herbert, which at least is cleaner) such a busy tone, all fizzy in the mids and furry in the treble and thuddy in the bass then it's got all the fuzzy gain, just ERGH

The SLO was just a revelation. It was like all the best elements of a Savage/5150/JCM800 and everything else good about the best guitar amps but with something so special, you can't explain it... just hearing that thing responding to your playing was so rewarding i had to be torn away from it... £3,700 though... but worth it

5150 III is a great amp, but only really does 1 sound, and its NOTHING like the 5150/6505's. I like it, but I dial my amps very differently.

the Uberschall was dialed 'br00t' and it sounded really thick and guttural. Very pleasing for a DM tone, it's got a nice 'burp' to it. You know; very quick response. Dialed in the way I like it, it's really singing and grinding. Go try it.

do it. Like I said, depending on your tuning; these amps really grunt. Try them with the UBERCAB if you can, my friend Si had one and it really made the amp sound very provocative.

For the record I really liked the 5150III and was actually going to get one. I used it for two dates and live and cranked it sounds very hmmm, like the overtones seem to try and overpower each other. The amp is biased very cold, like other variants of 5150's but you can't re-bias these as the transformers are only designed to output at lower (brown/variac'd) levels; creating at moderate volumes a really delicious tone, but cranking it doesn't give out the power which makes the other amps I listed 'Great'. I was told that I really needed to run it with the EVH cab, I did so for one more show and sure enough the amp came alive and sounded a hell of a lot better. But still, i wasn't convinced and sent it back. In short, it got 'loud' but didn't throw the air to the back of the room, you know that feeling when you're standing in front of your amp and its blowing even the tightest trousers around like they're 30" flares and it hits you in the stomach and feels like someone's squeezing you stomach around like a water balloon. Mmmmm, at least my powerball does that.

The uberschall I played with was super crisp and clear and a bit thin sounding, wasn't dialed in to anything in particular since the guy is just a music enthusiast and he only played on it for a second before I bought my Fireball. He also had matching Diezel head/cab but I didn't get to hear it.

The one amp that I've never played, or even seen in the flesh, is a Rivera Knucklehead, and I'd love to try one out, they look extremely tasty. That and a Roadking, either would be fun times...

By 5150 III do you mean the non-Peavey EVH amp? That's just designed for "brown sound" 24/7? Never tried one, why bother when you've got 5150's and 6505's?

Also, what's the score with this new Peavey 3120?

a bit thin sounding? jesus; listen to anything by Avenged Sevenfold, especially of 'City of Evil' that tone is very a-typical of the Uberschall. Clear and crisp yes.... but the mids are so thick and the low end is very clear.

If he dialed it for maximum presence, then sure it would sound very thin but I played one through both a 4x12 uberkab and... well this exact setup at my mate Si's house:

and with his settings through a 2x12 it was still RIDICULOUSLY thick and syrupy.

i might be one of the only people that doesn't really get to grips with the 6505/+, it seems to be the go to amp for metal if you don't know how to get a decent tone because there isn't a 'bad' tone on it... I don't mind it, its got great push and drive but, i dunno i just find it souless. Thats what I did like about the 5150III, that things got SOUL. The 5150's just leave me really cold. I mean sure, they're fucking brutal but thats not for me.

the 3120 is the 120 watt switchable EL34/6L6 head, should be interesting. The other day I was using a JSX and i quite liked it, but its response was very alien to me and I didn't get to try it for that long. I heard the 3120 was the hot rodded JSX with a very british response, both in tone and feel, but with darker overtones than the JSX. But if it has that 'peavey quack' when you hit a string, i won't like it all that much.

See, I already find the JSX very "British" what with the EL34 power section. I always saw the JSX for what it is, a modded Triple XXX. Making that more British would just make it a Marshall to me...

You probably found the same thing with the JSX as I always do, the active EQ is very weird for a guitar amp to have.

indeed. not really feeling it.

Peavey seem to be trying to play the modded marshall game, i'll reserve judgement until someone turns up with one.

Infact, upon reading and hearing some samples id say that the dirty channels on the 3120 resemble a cross between 6505+ and a JSX but with a darker feel to both. Black Stone Cherry anyone?

yeah, no shit. dropping that amount of money on something only to have it snatched up and/or beaten around on tour would fail.
