Any advice for a guitarist who wants to pick up bass ? No pick either. Gimme a couple links to some good beginner exercises.

well, obviously its hard to hit the strings as hard when playing fast, but in general i reckon a good bass player should have an even attack (if thats what you're after), even if that ment easing down on the "slow" hits, so as to match the attack when playing fast.

also, the bass will obviously drown more in most fast parts, because its more stuff happening. Not necessarily a bad thing tho, depending on what you're playing, some times its just not right for the bass to shine through too much..

I love what Errlund does in Mephitication (brt, altered genesis album) tho, double thumping and da shizzl on the fast bits, so you can hear some funny bass sounds over it all

edit: thats alot of butts and ifs! i guess i should have kept to "whatever works" :D

I totally appreciate all the real advice i got on here. I have begun tapping on everything 321 like you said- disincarnate and it was kinda like Duh why didn't i think of something that simple before.

I realize Erlend is the bomb diggaty but he has enough on his plate and I wouldnt want to take anything from him that would deter his working on Incinerate haha (not that he is the one holding back the Incinerate disc **cough Scott cough**) lol

Another thing you can do is practice playing something easier, basic 8th notes for example, with just your 2nd and 3rd finger. Ideally, if you can get the same speed with any combination of 2 of your fingers, you can get going pretty fast when you incorporate them all (or at least 3) into your playing. You can even go as far as taping weaker fingers to stronger ones when you practice so they will develope a feel for the motion and better independance.

play with whatever works for you personally. im a finger player and always will be. started with fingers over 15 years ago. ive tried to mess with a pick but its just not for me.

a pick will almost always produce a bit of a cleaner or more cutting of a sound. aka. "attack". fingers almost always will give a deeper thicker and a bit lower of a sound.

as someone said to me a logn time ago, when you play bass with a pick your, "playing bass". when playing with your fingers you are "playing the bass". there is a difference.

thats also one fo the other reasons i play with fingers. a bass is supposed to be a bass. bass is low end to fill the music out. also, sure bass plays right along with guitar in most DM but it shouldnt be limited to it. nothing wrong with playing harmonies off of what the guitars are doing, or doing a slightly different rythm then the guitars. as long as all the notes are correct and work properly.

bass should not always just be another guitar playing right along but 1 octive lower.

my $.02

I don't get why a 6 string bassist with a pick would be funny?

Do you guys with 6 strings tune the high string to a C or B?

If I had one I would definitely tune it to C. I dont think my brain could handle the pattern shift.

C, ERBs are way more symmetrical than a normal guitar as they are tuned in straight 4ths. When I write songs I tune the electric guitar an octave higher than a 6 string and it makes chording and harmony tons easier than standard.

Depends on what you are playing, obviously.

I prefer fingers.

D Y N A M I C S !!

(knowingly opinionated) You can get a more consistent sound with a pick... and thats why i prefer not to use one actually. yeah tremelo is pretty hard at first with your fingers, but when you get that shit down, you can put way more feel on it.
besides, whenever i try to use a pick on my bass, i hear too much scratchiness on the strings.

http://www.stevedigiorgio.com/bin/column.pdf

A good little column on multi-finger speed picking for metal bassists by Big Steve Digiorgio.

Hope it helps.
