was thinking about going to a new direction.. and selling my EMG 85/81 set for some new pickups.. something that will still sound ballsy.. but not complete shit when i change to a clean channel. where can i buy apc pickups a few of you dudes speak of? and how much do they run? or what kinds are there? etc.

It makes all the difference in the world, imo. That said, my next pickups are going to be Q-Tuners.

No, I meant 18v vs. 9v. APC pickups WILL make all the difference.

getting air nortons in my neck and steves special in my bridge has been on my mind too. i know it would sound great. but hopefully would give me enough output for the high gain stuff.

^ I have that set in my RR1, fucking INCREDIBLE tone. No mush, in either position and honestly just so much grind in the sound, like i've never heard before.

would put the emgs to shame?
even for death metal shit?
how are the leads?
and is the neck a good jazz pickup?

because im sure i can get enough money to buy both by just selling the emgs.

Oh man, EMG's are nothing, i used them for a while in a Strat and still have a set in a BC RICH... Dimarzio's are fantastic, also if you don't like a particular model, they will send you another one within 7 days of fitting providing you haven't raped it!

If you wanted an EXCELLENT jazz pickup in the neck, go for the Air Zone, but the Air Norton does the job really, REALLY well if you roll of the treble a little on your clean settings. It's very clear. The Steve's special is an excellent DM pickup... if you're tuned to or bellow C then it's really one of the best pickups out there, it's voiced to give the most clarity possible to the player, the mids are scooped out but thats not really a problem as you get them all back on your amp... (remember all tonal specs are when the amp is set neutral e.g. all set to 12o'clock) it just cleans everything up.

The SS, for lead is excellent, think John Petrucci style tones, nice and clear but not ice pick in the forehead style biting treble, a nice rounded edge but still punchy... for fast sweeps and lead work it's almost unmatched, notes dont end up smudging into one-another and everything comes out really crisp.
As for the Air Norton, its a lot more rounded but again, really clear, precise... but each note has character, something EMG's lack... for Jazz, roll off your treble (or tone pot) and it's perfect, in my spare time I play a lot of jazz and it's one of my favorite pickups from Dimarzio! If you ask me it's one of the best sets for extreme metal.

If you can get your hands on one, play an old Ibanez JPM model, thats the same set... also I do believe the pickups in a MusicMan John Petrucci would be the same, and so from this we can deduce that the tone heard on Psycroptic's Symbols of Failure is going to be very close to what you're looking at.

also someone recommended emg 60s in the neck with 81s. that the 60s have much better cleans than the 85 or even most passive pickups. =\

The Norton sounds incredible for such things, however I prefer my Dimarzio Eric Johnson neck pickup for arps... thats a strange pickup though, the steves special sounds really hifi if that makes sense so yes it sounds great and isn't as biting as many 'metal' bridge' buckers for that type of application.

maybe you just can't Sweepz properly.. and that's why they sound so shit.
in which case no matter what pickup you put in you're still gonna sound like shit.

The drop sonic is similar to the SS output wise, but it's more balanced, with more mid range 'honk' than the SS (which isn't hard really!) It's specifically designed for low tunings on 6 strings when the bar is placed towards the bridge. The Steve's Special does a similar job, but with a little more clarity and a little less OOMMMMMMPH!

the Eric johnson is NOTHING like the Norton, or any other humbucker, it's voiced like a single coil, very crisp, articulate and clear.
