I don't mind, I'll take an honest opinion over pretentious bullshit any day. The music is an acquired taste, though.

It's cool that you're into that music. I can appreciate it, but I can't stand listening to it, it's just atrocious to me. Right up there with country music.

It's like what Buddy Rich said when he was checked into the hospital before he died. The nurse asked him if he was allergic to anything, and he said "Yeah... country music."

Willith,

Be sure the therapist helping you with diagnosis is licensed. Begin by asking him what malignant narcissism is, and what it's symptoms look like.

Hell, maybe you should take a printed copy of your posts here with you. There is a neat "find all posts by _______" option you could use.

..and he is the founder of the music college I'm going to. He put £20,000,000 of his own money into building it, and if you can't read music or don't have grade 5 theory (both quite simple)...then you can't get in.

I can read music on piano but only know a limited amount of theory. I'm sure theory would help me improve, but I think it's wrong to say that it's necessary for me to write good music. It would just make it a lot easier for me to get to it, but even without studying it, I can tell that my music gets more involved over the years.
I remember playing a piece I wrote for a music club several years ago, where most of the other members knew much more music than I did. After I finished people were giving their comments and a lot of them said that they noticed things that I have no conscious realization that I did, because I don't know the theory.
Theory gives you the names for everything you do but you can do a lot without knowing it, and to think that it matters whether or not the artist knew the theory behind what they wrote is a view that I really pity.

I think it's a real shame when people get overly analytical about music and totally disregard the visceral and emotional responses. Elitists often seem like they are listening to music more to stroke their own ego than to make themselves happy. Of course, I realize that the only way some people can be happy is by telling themselves that they are superior to others.

Yeah, the "masses" listen to dumb music. But I'd still rather be one of them, enjoying music with no brain, than be a fucking prick who thinks I'm a "better" listener.

Indeed, like our obnoxious friend Willith. I for one don't look down on anyone for their lack of particular knowledge, only their attitude. Some of the world's most amazing musicians work within oral traditions. It all depends what one wants to do. If one wants to write orchestral music without hiring an orchestrator, one has to read music and know some things about orchestration. But that doesn't really apply in this cintext, I think.
