Barus - Drowned

this was a pleasant surprise
. nicely dense and atmospheric, some dissonant parts to keep Odium happy, after one listen this has potential, it has something for everyone except slam fans :P

Re: what are you listening to?

Barus is definitely a smexy mishmash, even those cleans kinda fit into the whole thing, dissonance is just the icing on the cake.

----

Returning to the new Wolvennest as some of the Svartidaudi dudes highly praised it in their recent AMA. It totally slipped my mind to get back to it after being quite intrigued by it during my initial spins. It requires some patience but damn, its good.

Definitely try it if you fancy stuff like Dolch, Urfaust and other Van Recs-core.

Re: what are you listening to?

A norwegian release from 2003, and it sounds as experimental and adventurous as Carheart released the same year by Virus. Not the same style of course, but an atypical listen, sometimes like an unpolished Deafheaven with natural sound. The tracks are included in the cd version of the (very good and stronger) new album.

Re: what are you listening to?

Opeth - Still Life.

Not my favourite, miss DeFarfalla on Bass duty, but still pretty good.

Iniquitous Savagery - Subversions Of The Psyche.

They remind me a less extreme version of Defeated Sanity, good brodal death overall.

Engulf - Gold And Rust.

Something between Hate Eternal, Ulcerate, Morbid Angel... It's a one man band, so the drums are programmed but don't distract too much the experience.

Didn't play Destiny 2, but I heard it has a spectacular soundtrack. Judging on this tune alone, it could be true. And ofc Kronos Quartet have their fingers in it as always.

Re: what are you listening to?

Really enjoying this BM band from members of Inverted (Ita). Modern tightness and composition with some traditional norwegian frost throwed in. Although pretty different, the overall feel reminds me the mighty Asmodee sometimes.

If more dungeon synth would sound like this, I would pay way more attention to the genre.

Lots of hype and praise surrounding this one and after a spin I can partially hear why. I bet it would be beneficial to dive into their previous material as well.

Oh yeah I just picked this up. I had Canada Songs back in the day and was sort of into it but stopped following them. Based on first couple (partial) listens, I really like this.

Re: what are you listening to?

Aye, its really memorable stuff and not too harsh on the ears. I have zero interest in noise rock so this ones took me by surprise.

Released by Fallen Empire couple of days ago. Nightmarish black metal with BaN vibes:

the whole Prava kollektiv is really good. there's Arkhtinn which is a nice alternative to Paysage d'Hiver (their debut full length was recently released after 6 demos), Voidsphere is a nice blend of Arkhtinn/PdH and Darkspace (i prefer their debut to the latest one which was released a couple of days ago), and Mahr which is its own thing, and probably the one most up your alley (slower paced, more dissonant)

I am familiar with all of them indeed. Arkhtinn and Voidsphere never did much for me, not bad at all but too mundane to keep me interested. At the same time I should give Mahr more attention, I heard their recent album only once, so I shall fix that.

---

This is still in its raw form. The main dude behind it said that the polished studio version will be out in early 2019. Stylistically it fuses atmospheric and avant-garde black metal with a touch of post rock/metal. I couldn't get enough of it when I stumbled upon it a while ago, very strong songwriting if you ask me.

Full album in its demo version: https://soliustitiae.bandcamp.com/releases
