The Film Thread

a thread for film nerdery to roam free.

discuss
-favorite movies
-upcoming movies
-technical stuff (cameras, cinematography, etc.)
-whatever the hell else

I think my favorite film of 2009 was definitely A Serious Man. I get the most pleasant of boners for the Coen brothers, especially when they do this well. I'd consider it up there with No Country For Old Men and Fargo.

Where the Wild Things Are definitely takes a close second for best film of 09. for me anyway.

has anyone seen The Road yet?

Anyone seen new moon yet ?

But seriously people who have not yet seen it should go watch antichrist, amazing movie and it's not every day you get to see Willem Dafoes cock ejactulate blood. Also looks fantastic, filmed by the same guy as slumdog millionaire. Favorite movie of 09 for sure.

I saw Up and Star Trek, and that's all I can remember for films of 2009. They were both extremely good movies.

But my favorite two of all time so far are Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

I can't wait to see Avatar when that comes out very soon.

I would have to pick Up over Star Trek though, mostly because I'm a sucker for Pixar movies (they're great, sadly I haven't seen Ratatouille yet)

yes @ pixar. They're the only thing I'm fond of within the Disney department now. oh, and Pirates of the Carribean is a guilty pleasure of mine. But Pixar is definitely guiltless. Ratatouille was really great too.

I hate Tim Burton and David Lynch.

If that makes me uncultured then so be it.

I didn't know hate for Tim Burton was a common thing. I just assumed that all of humanity has their heads up his ass, suckling on any nutrients that are available in his nu-goth cavity.

Top films:
1. Children of Men
2. Forrest Gump
3. Apocalypse Now
4. Garden State

Too much Lynch hating on this thread. Granted not everything he does is worth mentioning, but when he gets it right it's pure fucking artistry. Mulholland Dr. is amazing for one.
Burton hasn't done anything worth particular mention for quite some years i'll give you that. Sweeney Todd wasn't bad though.
Love almost everything the Coen's do.
Spike Jonze is great, especially teamed with the genius of Charlie Kaufman.

Any of you guys familiar with the British director Shane Meadows? He is particularly good, if you like your stark, low-budget independent films. Highly recommend Dead Man's Shoes by him.

I'm gonna try this here because I've failed everywhere else; Am I the ONLY mother fucker on the planet that fucking HATED House of A 1000 Corpses? It was every horror movie I've ever seen in my life rolled into one giant shitball that eventually amounted to NOTHING.
And don't even get me started on that fucking blond woman. I wanted to falcon punch her out of existence. YOU'RE NOT CUTE!

No, Rob Zombie's films are just terrible. His remake of Halloween was absolute trash, and funny in parts it shouldn't have been. Dude has no idea how to direct or write a good film.

The book's better than the film.

Oh, and Kung Fu Hustle is the secretion of God's perfection gland.

"I don't understand this - this is probably shit" is the route that my train of thought generally takes when I am faced with one of Lynch's creations. The guy needs a cup of coffee and a hug.

The movie "Moon" by Bowie's kid was pretty good.

I saw "public enemies" yesterday and I agree: meh/10

Lynch doesn't suck.
Seth Rogan does suck.

Favorite: Either Royal Tenenbaums (Anderson), or Stroszeck (Herzog)

For some inexplicable reason, I've yet to see A Clockwork Orange even though I know I should. I actually recorded it one time to watch but for some reason my TV sometimes screws up recordings so it didn't work. Twas the biggest FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU of the month.

Taxi Driver is good.
This is England is good.
Dead Man's Shoes is good.
Magnolia was good until I realised that I hated it.
Star Trek is alright.
Haven't finished watching Antichrist yet.
Vincent Gallo can perish without a trace and the world would remain absolutely as it was with him in it.

I guess I totally missed the point of the film and in the end couldn't enjoy it for what it was.

Something like that.
