'cheese factor' indeed, that's the word ;)

Same reason why I'm not into Ayreon for instance.

Bah, The Human Equation wasn't cheesy! (although the earlier albums were)

I didn't necessarily meant the cheese factor concerning Ayreon, but it's also the 'symphonic' thing and the general atmosphere which somehow puts me off.

I think there is a somewhat of a cheese factor to be found in Ayreon's sound.

Having said that... I like cheese (to some extent!) and I like Ayreon. The Human Equation is fückin brilliant!

oops. NP: Kamelot - Ghost Opera (this is my first full listen... fairly decent stuff... also, some cheese is present!)

Yes, (synth-)symphonic metal really annoys me...

That said, Ayreon uses a lot of real instruments, and his big symph sound - when used - is a bit non-standard, almost like a Wall-Of-Sound (TM) in the same vein as Devin Townsend. If I recall correctly.

Who'm I kidding, though, I'm totally biased as I LOVE The Human Equation (though i don't remember any conventional cheese-orchestra stuff on it). I own his other big double-albums but have never listened to them.

Been listening to Green Carnation's "Journey to the End of the Night," which I decided to purchase, and which was worth the $21.00 :)
Also have two other newer CDs I've been listening to: Muse's "Black Holes and Revelations" (which is growing on me slowly), and Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing," which I haven't gotten much of a chance to listen to

My absolute favorite arcturus album.. hands down from top to bottom I could listen to this album. Great work.
My personal favorite would probably either Kinetic or StarCrossed

I have to agree, though I like the debut a lot too.

Yah,guys awesome band I must say but a pity it's disbanded...pure damn great art of music...In my opinion,Vortex is wasting his talent and time playing bass and doing back vocals on DB.

Vortex has a great voice and I really like his contribution to the DB songs that he sings on, but I have to say that a whole album with him on lead vocals is a bit too much for me.

I didn't really like the Borknagar albums he sang on and also the last Arcturus album was not on par with their other stuff i.m.o.

NP: Porcupine Tree - Insignificance

I agree here.. I like Vortex and in my opinion he's done some great job with Dimmu Borgir.. But I'm not too impressed with his work in Arcturus... I'm still a fan of Garm, even from their black metal phase.

Just my humble OPINION.

Sideshow Symphonies had some of Arcturus's best songs. Vortex also did a great job, the drama of his voice suiting the theatrical elements of the music perfectly... I was very sad to see them go (not as sad as I was two days ago, though!)

On the Borknagar albums, though, I don't like all of his singing. Doesn't quite work!

But with Dimmu his contribution is excellent and his voice provides a great contrast to the other things going on.

Ha ha, argh, how could I get the lyrics wrong to my fave GC song? I was at work and singing it to myself, but I know the next line is "I know you're cold, I see you shiver", so I was close!

What are ya anyway... the correctness police? Maybe it SHOULD be "cold" - I know Jonas RenSKe would agree...

btw: How was Wacken?

I'm sorry, I just cannot see typing errors, spelling errors etc. without mentioning them, it's compulsive! The other day I wrote an email to an editor of Holland's biggest Metal magazine cause he kept calling Katatonia Finnish, where everybody knows they're Swedish. It just annoys me that someone who claims to be a Katatonia fan doesn't even know where they're from. As a journalist of Holland's biggest Metal magazine, you just gotta have your facts right.

Anyway, when I make remarks like that, just know it is me saying it and don't get too worried ;)

Wacken was da bomb!! Haha, it was great! I might post some pics in the pics thread later.
