Hahahaha! @ Sweeps

Yeah, I totally agree with what you just said. Didn't mean to come across as somebody that was against unoriginality.

The point was if you're going to like The Faceless then you're going to like Formless, and vice versa. If you don't like The Faceless then it's probably because there isn't a chick in the band.
Yes, Brain Drill fucking sucks, but the two bands we're talking about are good (given that you like that style of music).

It ruffles my jimmies when people hate one band with the same style of music but love the other -- like hating Sons of Aurelius but loving The Black Dahlia Murder -- and they justify it by picking out some trivial aspect of the music like robot voice in a song or something.

She's sloppy and trying to play too fast, but she's like 13 and all.

Meh, I completely and totally disagree with this but I'm too lazy to argue.
This discussion probably won't lead somewhere anyway. To each their own. Let's carry on and start posting more videos of 13 year old girls molesting their guitar, it entertains me more than arguing.

Formless are good friends of mine from my hometown. We went to high school together, played in first bands, etc. Very good musicians. Also girl guitarist in question happens to be ex-gf. Haha.

I always thought Formless had potential but as others said wear they wear their influences on their sleeves too much...I'm not really into The Faceless so I can't really get into Formless either :P

I moved here last May to work at Morrisound Recording. If you frequent any of the shows around here I've probably seen you (or the other way around).

We all know you pick up things quicker when you're younger, have way more free time, less responsibilities, etc. It's not about how good you are at your age, but rather how good you are for the amount of time you've been playing. Most of these "child prodigies" you hear about (Ana Vidović, Grisha Goryachev, or Thales Smith for example) have already practiced their 10,000 hours before they were teenagers while studying the suzuki method.

Tbh, I was more blown away by Tony Cicoria (a "late bloomer") when I saw him on a PBS documentary called "Musical Minds." This guy was an orthopedic surgeon who had no background in music for 42 years, gets struck by lightning one day, believes it to be "divine intervention" and decides he wants to learn how to play and compose classical piano music. He achieved all of this while still working 10-12 hours in medicine, going through a divorce as a direct result, in just a little bit over a decade.
It's debatable whether you really pick things up faster as a kid or not. Factors that might play a role are a different perception of time (kids don't care so much about overall progress, since they feel they have every time of the world), whether you have a teacher or not (adults often think they can learn everything by themselves), and of course free-time.
Often adults have a wrong understanding of "talent" too, thinking they just don't have what it takes, kids would never think that way.
And then you have those "trained apes" of course, who are what they are because of massive parental guidance.

But sure, you are right principally. I still think it's especially impressive for a kid to come up with the devotion and discipline required for playing an instrument. A kid doing a great interpretation is especially impressive too, since this has more to do with feeling, knowledge and experience than actual skill.

Those two e.g., while technically not perfect, interpret like experienced players:

Have to check out this documentation.
