This could help with EQ, if you understand what using EQ is for in the first place.

I have a little frequency chart like that I keep next to my computer. As far as as "fake" drums and guitar goes, I've pretty much got that shit memorized now.

Excellent thread though.

Like producing as in engineering and recording songs? Or producing albums in a way where you think it's your duty to make big decisions and rework arrangements for other bands?

Because if you want to get into recording, buy some gear, learn how to use it through books or schooling, and start practicing. As for producing, I have no idea how producers have been given that much respect and power to handle important decisions I personally think most bands and artists can handle themselves. So, I wouldn't know.

Whatever suits your needs. The typical home setup includes a somewhat decent computer, an external audio interface (a device that takes line or mic signals, converts them to digital, and outputs sound to monitors), a pair of near-field reference monitors, a couple microphones, and some recording software.

All of these have been discussed on this forum, and I'm sure you can find a good heap of information on google.

Some good home and pro recording sites are

www.homerecording.com
www.mixonline.com
http://messageboard.tapeop.com
www.hometracked.com

And for gear reviews and discussion, www.gearslutz.com is quite good.

Another but more expensive option is to get an analog mixing board with plenty of preamps and a standalone AD/DA converter with a firewire output or a PCI card. That is way more professional, but you have many more options and can expand your knowledge of recording a lot by learning a setup like this.
