fuck iTunes

Just got my computer back after being repaired for a major Trojan attack. Someone in my family had already plugged the external hard drive back in. For some reason the drive changed from E: to D:. Now my iTunes library is full of broken links for about half the songs. I checked the physical folder for my iTunes library and found that everything from after January 2010 is missing except for music ripped from CDs. Fortunately, all the music I had is saved in another spot, it's just missing from the iTunes folder.

Questions:

1.) How the fuck does this happen? My external hard drive wasn't getting repaired, so no one fixing the computer could have fucked with it. Why would it remove everything from the past year except for ripped CDs? I know moving your folder from one drive to another can cause this sort of thing, but the copied files are physically missing, not just hiding from iTunes.

2.) If I can make it the E: drive again will this automatically fix it? Or do I still have to manually re-up all the folders that are lost?

3.) I can't remember what happens if you sync your ipod with broken links. From what I remember it just gives you a message that it couldn't copy certain files, but if they were already on your iPod they are still there. Am I correct? I don't really want to lose half of my ipod content by syncing it.

Whomever "repaired" your computer probably formated the drives (good move).
I don't know iTunes in detail, but I guess you just have to scan your drives (the fixed and the mobile) again, thus sorting the files into the library.
Really no big deal.
Just search for library functions or s.th. similar in the iTunes options and select the actual paths where the music is stored.

The drives being mixed up is a consequence of the formating, as long as your files are present it's no problemo.

Edit: Yes fuck iTunes. I understand you need it for your little toy, but it's a really shitty prog basically. Try the new Winamp e.g. it has the same basic functions but the search (just press F3 and type keywords) is a lot faster.
Just put every music you have into a single drive hierachy, load it into winamp, and navigate per F3.

I know how to do this, but it's tedious to go through every one of the hundreds of songs with broken links. I'll probably just delete the files and re-add those folders with those albums. This will take me some time because of the sheer amount of albums with broken links. In the meantime, there's music I want to add to my ipod, so I'm asking if syncing it will cause those songs with broken links to be stricken from my ipod. I don't remember this happening in the past, but I'm asking to be sure.

The other thing I'm asking is how those files went missing from the folder in the first place. The folder was in an external hard drive that shouldn't have been tampered with.

Are you sure those files are actually missing, and not just the links to the files?
Navigate with the Windows Explorer and check if the files are actually where you'd expect them.

I loveddd my winamp but I believe it fucked up my iPod when I was trying to sync it. I dunno it was weird but I probably didn't look into it deep enough

iTunes is the worst program I have ever used. Confusing, stupid layout, retarded file management. It's the worst.

Just go to device manager on your computer and change the hard drive letter from there. I don't know if it will fix your problem but that's how you do it. Google will yield more specific instructions.

It's the files that are actually missing from the iTunes folder. See I have a general music folder where I store everything I download or rip from cd (unless I rip it straight through itunes, which I've been doing lately). Whenever I add songs to my itunes library, obviously I hit "file: add folder to library" and select the folder I want. It shows up on my library, but as a physical file it gets copied into an "iTunes Music" folder separate from my general music folder. Now usually when links get broken, the file is still somewhere in my iTunes music folder. This time, everything that I've added to it since Jan 2010 is missing, except for CDs I ripped through iTunes. Fortunately, I haven't actually lost all those files, as they are still in the general music folder, but I'm pissed that I even have to re-add them all and would prefer a quick fix, but it doesn't seem like there's any recourse.

In any case, I'm not too concerned anymore. I just synced my ipod with the new music, but the songs that had broken links are still on there. All I need to do now is one by one delete the broken links and re-add those folders.

Are all your music files on the external? If so it's SUPER simple to fix. Just delete everything from iTunes. Then go file>add to library then just select the main file where all your music held.

This would work if my music collection didn't exceed my iPod capacity. Thus, the iTunes music folder reflects what's currently on my iPod or what will be put on it. If I put the entire music folder into the library I would then have to go through and delete everything I don't want to get it down to 27.50 GB. That would be more tedious than what i have to do now, which is just delete the albums with broken links and re-add each.

This is why 160GB ipods are essential

i cant grasp what you're saying right now. im drunk. why does it matter that your music collection exceeds your ipod? this is a completely separate issue. fix your itunes, then worry about whats on your ipod...i must be missing something here.

So you use a different player to listen to music on your computer and just use iTunes to sync? I also use Winamp to have a faster access to audio files, but iTunes is my main player since I sync music with it and can use my iPhone as a remote.

I have all of my music on an external harddrive linked to the library in iTunes and never ran into problems when I did format my hard-drives and re-installed windows.

I sync three devices with iTunes, an iPhone 4, an iPod Classic 160GB and an iPod Shuffle 1GB.

So why don't you add all music to iTunes and then create a playlist that you sync with your iPod? You don't need to sync all of your music.

While I have 108 GB of music in my iTunes library my current iPhone playlist is only close to 800MB.

dunno what you can do now, but you should check manually manage ipod from now on so that shit doesn't happen again. well it sounds like you don't have it manually managed since you said your itunes folder reflects whats on your ipod, if you manually manage you don't have to have an itunes music folder or w/e which automatically syncs with your ipod. you just drag what you need into your ipod from wherever (through itunes of course). also means you wont have a redundant bunch of music taking up 30gb of your HD.
