Just get a cheaper set to make sure you can even play/will set time out to play.

No need to buy a $1200 set only to find out you have zero future with it.

If you're just beginning, buy either a beginner's or itermediate set. You can usually find good deals on either, and they generally come with hardware and basic cymbals. As you progress, you'll want to move onto something a a little more custom to your tastes, but for now something basic will do. Pearl and DW make some decent beginner's sets, so I'd look into those. Stay away from Groove Percussion though. They're sturdy, but the setup is just too akward to really learn anything.

Edit: On kits like those, expect to pay something like $400-$600 for the whole setup.

if it's your first set just get a cheap CB or pacific kit, or if you want a fairly quality beginner kit, pearl forums are good

I would add to this thread, but I'm sure what I would say has been said already. So:

Get a beginner's 5-piece or a cheap 4-piece, some cheap cymbals, and cheap etc. learn about how to use whatever you have to be good, or at least to a level where you can justify to yourself getting a higher-quality kit

Why buy new for your first kit? Buy used, save yourself some money, get a better kit with a few minor vanity blemishes and you are set.

I got a really nice Mapex Pro M kit for 600 with cymbals used when I started and built off of that.

My advice, get an inexpensive kit, but don't go super cheap bottom line. You'll be pissed that you wasted $500 on something that sounds like crap, and if you decide to stick with it, you'll want to upgrade immediately. If you don't stick with it, you'll be stuck with a piece of shit nobody wants to buy off you.

Go to a GC and play a few kits (though IMO, they never ever tune the damn floor model kits). Get something that at a bare minimum you can resell to some other beginning or intermediate drummer.

Stick to something like a Tama or Pearl or Pacific drums....something that will sound pretty good but not break your bank. When you start getting good, then you can consider moving up to big boy territory. But I'd advise against buying a cheap piece, cause you will have immediately flushed your money down the tubes.

As fr as cymbals go, a nice Sabian or Zildjian starter pack will do nicely. They actually won't sound half bad, and should hold up to your non-technique-having-ass putting a beating on them. You can buy nice cymbals that sound good later.

You will not break your drums. So buy decent. You WILL break cymbals at first....lots of them. So feel free to cheap out until you learn how to play without breaking those.

hah, is it bad that I've never broken a cymbal except two really thin small splashes, only a few months ago too?

My cymbals break after maybe a year and a half of use. My sticks last anywhere from 6 months to a year (The Travis Barker signature Zildjian sticks are beasts).

My greatest moment was getting a new head for my snare and puncturing it after like 5 hits.
