Re: What is the best doom album?

What’s everyone’s take on Ahab’s Call of the Wretched Sea? Any more recent release some of you might consider classics? I’ve been really into Primitive Man’s Caustic. I love how monotonous it is if that makes any sense

Re: What is the best doom album?

Best Ahab album is Divinity of Oceans I feel but their first two you can’t go wrong, last two Mournful Congregation, last three Evoken, last four Esoteric, Ataraxie, Monolith, Slow, all bands releasing modern classics. There’s a good several handfuls of bands as it’s not a difficult genre to mess up.

As the all-time heavyweight it’s either Epicus, Turn Loose the Swans or Thergothon/Disembowelment. And then before that Sabbath any of the first six records.

Should have added a smug emoji to that last sentence, or in fact any sentence.

Hard to argue against Turn Loose The Swans

Re: What is the best doom album?

That is a very good choice. I’ll spin it later.

On a sidenote the new mdb is probably my favorite since angel and dark river, in no small part due to its consistency.

Re: What is the best doom album?

Personal favourites in no order. Also not a genre I consider myself an expert in, I haven’t even listened to a lot of the Doom Metal classics. Black Sabbath I’ve left out as I don’t really consider them Doom.

Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction
The Ruins of the Beverast - Foulest Semen of a Sheltered Elite
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata
Yob - The Great Cessation

How tf are some of you considering The Ruins of Beverast Doom Metal??? Do they have elements of the genre in their song? Sure. But, they're not a Doom band.

I'm not the biggest doom fan by any means but surely Warning's Watching From A Distance deserves a mention ?

Yep, realised it was borderline, but love the album too much not to mention it.

Yes, it most definitely deserves a mention. Top 10 for sure.

Don't get me wrong, I love the album as well. But, it's a bit too far to put it in the Doom category.

Not really straight doom but this is my favourite.

I'm not really into the Sabbath-derivative stuff anyway.

Katatonia are rock.

I used to only worship their old stuff but their new stuff is actually amazing too.

Yep, that song is sick and I agree about the upbeat too!

That album is my favourite of their newer stuff still too, in all aspects.

Re: What is the best doom album?

That there is their masterpiece of all their records I think, Mikael of Opeth said it was a very special album previewing it during Opeth’s peak. But if the next one is better than the last one they will likely be in my top three prog bands. Fall of hearts took me so long to get into but the variety in the end won me over tremendously.
