Incredible how creative this is. Kinda wish the vocalist would shut up during some of the super sick parts... But, yeah, this is amazing. Pretty clearly the best production job they had as well.

Damn, that song is sick!

I'll admit I don't really like most of the band's previous output. The mixes are so bad that the compositions are totally inaudible. Marston doing what Marston does best is exactly what they needed.

I mean... that's patently not true.

The clarity of this production is about the same as Passages and Prelude.

It's definitely technically the best production they've had though.
The production on Chapters and Disposal Of The Dead were excellent IMO, the lack of transparency is almost necessary for that sonic aesthetic. In contrast with Passages which was pretty transparent, but harsh as fuck - that album really hurts to listen to....

Chapters was the only other "death metal" one that you could hear. Passages was a fuzzy mess, and Disposal of the Dead was just laughably incoherent.

Sounds fucking sick. I could do without that goofy section in the middle though. Still better than anything off of Disposal of the Dead

Re: New DEFEATED SANITY

It's a sacrilege on this board but I agree with DS being inaudible on some records, at least for me. On Chapters, I can't make out the riffs, too much of them just sounds the same to my ears. I never got the hype around this album, unlucky me! But it does'n't matter cause I still think Prelude >>>>>> all they did, ha ha!

The new track is excellent... and audible.

Re: New DEFEATED SANITY

I feel like the Passages mix was a bit of an overreaction to the sound of Chapters. Lille discusses it in that podcast someone linked a few weeks ago somewhere...

I remembering hearing Chapters for the first time as a shrivelled weakling and thinking that you couldn't hear anything but now it's one of my favourite albums of all time, sound included. The super saturated, dark tones give it half of it's mood. Do you really need to be able to pick out every note on a brutal death metal album?

I thought Passages was too bright and harsh too when I first heard it, but I like it now too. Again, it gives that album part of it's character (summed up by the song title 'Frenzy').

In fact, I think the only DS album that I ever liked the sound of when I first heard it was Disposal, but by then I was right into the band anyway. It seemed the most balanced between raw and heavy and clear anyway. How can you not jumpdafuckup at 0:25 of Into the Soil?

Anyway, onto this new track. I think the bass is a little overly forward, but that's a Colin thing I guess. I don't think DS is a band that ever had mixes that shortchanged the bass playing... I do wish that there was a little more saturation in the string section overall. This particular track kinda feels a bit like a Dharmata track with brutal vocals. I hope there are some more slammy songs on the full thing. Insecta Incendium was probably a little more to my liking... I'm a bit worried that Christian's absence will be felt more than I thought.

Agree with all of that...

It seems mental to me people are saying you can't hear what's going on in Passages... I don't enjoy that production, but one of the things it definitely is is transparent.

Re: New DEFEATED SANITY

New album is batshit insane. Like Dharmata but with brutal death metal rather than 90’s Floridian mode. Going to take a lot of spins to digest what the hell is going on...but I like it.

Side note; anyone got a Dharmata long sleeve shirt that they would be willing to sell!? Can’t find it anywhere!

I know it?s the defeated sanity way but why they didn?t groove out those last seconds; no doubt there?ll be more moments on the record.

The 1:35 is a squeeze out final rep moment for sure.

Ingested have updated their metallum to ?sounds like DS? haha

I'm probably just too excited by what I'm hearing, but these vocals and riffs are the best I've heard from them since Chapters.

Watching the vid again and again and god, Lille is unhuman. Not sure about another guy who can compose music / handle both guitar and drums at this level. And with the Wolfgang-like beanie it looks even better!
The track is killer, can't wait to listen to the whole thing.

Re: New DEFEATED SANITY

Been listening to this one a fair bit the past month or so. It’s a great record, but I actually think I need more spins before it all sinks in. It’s not as immediate as Chapters or Passages were for me, that’s for sure. Complex af, a lot to get your head around.

There’s some sick moments, but I would say it’s a little below Chapters/Passages/Dharmata for me, and probably on par with Psalms, better than Disposal and Prelude.

I think my struggles are mainly due to the front end of the album being weaker than the back end. The last three tracks are easily my favourite on the record.

If you’re a DS fan though, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a banger.

Re: New DEFEATED SANITY

I expect this to be on par with Passages, better than disposal, but better than prelude and on par with psalms? That is an interesting take. The two tracks I’ve heard appear to have the riffs of passages but the composition of chapters.

Ulcerate album finally arrived so I can see what you’re all moaning about, but it isn’t quite hitting the sweet spot; gave the one before it another go and it clicked though, after four years. That record is genius.

New DS is amazing, way too early for me to rank it, but it's a 10/10 for me. Shrines was another record that took more spins than usual to sink in, but I have it neck and neck with Everything is Fire.
