Does the lead guitarist use a string dampener?

I saw them play last night and he was using a blue hair tie as a dampener.

What's a string dampener?
|
I'm new to string-dampening, and was curious if it still has the same effect on guitars wit Tremelo-locking systems, and how exactly it works (how much tension, what is the effect/main difference, what you can use for homemade ones, etc).
|
String dampeners make you sound cleaner and better than you actually are. It's cheating! But, if you want to use one, just wrap a sock around the fretboard somewhere around 3rd-5th fret. The tension should be tight enough to mute all the strings, but not enough to fret the strings(strings should not ring out). Then play and sound better than ever. This will stop all open strings from ringing though arpeggios and runs.

I hate when people call something cheating. You're an idiot. This shit was invented for a reason. To make your shit sound better. How is it cheating? It doesn't make your hands move any faster or slower so shut up you fucking idiot.
|
Easy there buddy. Dont get all worked up over that. Quite rude in fact.
I do somewhat, using choice words, agree with you. I'd see it more as a band trademark sound than cheating. Think about this... Jim's up there working his ass off with that guitar work. Dampner or not, he made my jaw drop at the 5-24 show. |
Exactly! It's not cheating, but it still is cheating. And when I say cheating, I don't mean cheating, I mean helping you sound cleaner than you are! Dude still rips though! Michael Angelo Batio uses his gay hair to distract you from his string dampener. hehe

Oh I'm not trying to talk bad about Jim, I was just wondering if that was a string dampener or a good luck charm or some other crap. |
He`s awesome. I couldnt believe he was singing and sweeping in a diamond for a disease. :dj:

Part of playing guitar however, is also being able to know exactly what techniques you can use to your advantage to make you more efficient, and overall just have a better sound.
Is putting your rig on a block of wood cheating because it limits buzzing sound which means you can then EQ differently, so you don't have to worry as much about where you pick the string to get a more trebly, or bassy sound? no, no it isn't. Besides, personally, I've never used anything to dampen my strings, but I just tried the hairtie thing, and I even had one that was a little tighter (it broke, so I tied it), and its effect was little to none. |

can you please take a photo about what you are talking about, i can't get it right. |

honestly, who gives a fuck. Jim owns.
|
my pleasure.
|
do you guys think i could get this to work on an acoustic guitar? should i go with the sock method or the hair tie method? :)
|
greg howe also uses a hair tie, and no-one's complaining.
|
where can one find a good hair tie? i might feel kinda gay looking around women stores trying to find a hair tie.
|
Hair ties make your legato and two-hand tapping cleaner because you don't have to mute the unused strings. Sweeping is more of a right hand technique, so I wouldn't say that Hair ties make your sweeping cleaner.

anyways.. jim owns. dampener or not. |

agreed |
only guys who use them 'cause they need 'em are those doofuses from avenged sevenfold
|
John Petrucci from Dream Theater always uses one in the studio.
Joe Satriani uses his hand. Anyway... I was wondering... Doesn't Arsis have Open notes in their songs? If they do, wouldn't the string dampening affect that? |

I've yet to try it, but I don't really see it as cheating if you're not relying on it, and you really can't rely on it to clean your tone up. There are some 8 finger tapping parts that are almost impossible to mute without something muting for you. (aimed at whoever said it was cheating...) |
