Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

https://deathspellomega.bandcamp.com...he-long-defeat

They came roaring back with a vengeance. Their best work since Paracletus.

Perfect album; fabulous leads, deep lyrics. These cats spent the pandemic properly.

10/10 and most likely AOTY.

Deep lyrics lifted word for word from some philosopher? Impressive.

Your post was crying out for a snarky response.

Sounds like they got rid of Aspa?

I much prefer the last two. This one sounds kind of uninspired. Generic even. Perhaps they should have taken a longer break.

I didn't hear him at all on the first track. I recognized his vocals on a few other tracks though. They appear to have several vocalists on this album.

Edit: Yeah, apparently the main guy from Funeral Mist, and Marduk is a session vocalist on this album. And so is the front man for Mgla

Re: Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

In the last track there are a bunch of lines that sound a hell of a lot like M from Mgla to me ("So lonk as everythink that breathes...").

Not blown away after the first spin, but there are some interesting parts in there for sure.

Really loving this release already and it's very quickly shaping up to be one of my favorites by them. I need to dive into it more, but the whole album is solid so far. I can't really pick out a stand out song because they're all so good.

Re: Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

I didn’t really enjoy either of the two releases before and this record is probably a notch worse. Whole thing kinda feels like a fleshed out jam session with overdubs, considering the amount of meandering and lack of standout passages. The melodic touches aren’t as elegant or quirky as on earlier records, in fact they feel underdeveloped and aren’t properly capitalized on when they’re promising. The lyrics aren’t very good either and fail to conjure up that same mysterious atmosphere they had when they were still basically copy and pasting Bataille, Sartre and whoeverthefuck. Meh.

Unhappy Re: Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

There?s not really a single thing I enjoy about it. It?s fucking gay mainly for the reasons Licht pointed out. Whereas previous releases may have the appearance of meandering, the structure was actually very tight knit and made perfect t sense. While chaotic at first, songs became more discernible. This sounds like a jam sesh. I don?t care to re listen for a 10th time, I?m trying too hard to like it. On previous releases I was excited to listen again and unlock its hidden secrets. I don?t care to do that at all. Also on previous releases one could enjoy the music regardless of the lyrics/concepts. The lyrics and concepts only add to the music; the music can stand by itself, rather than the other way around. Probably the first DSO I don?t care for at all and I love everything from Infernal battles to Furnaces.

Maybe it just me because I?ve been listening to angelcorpse, cannibal Corpse, demigod, slayer, inquisition, and Judas Priest as of late.

Also for what it?s worth, one of the vocalists on the first track sounds EXACTLY like the vocalist for 2nd and 3rd prayer on SMRC.

Re: Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

I can see why this might be a disappointment to some fans. It's certainly not their best album, but it's far from their worst. I disagree with the poster above me, this album still easily shits all over all the early stuff with Shaxul as their front man. Deathspell Omega was a pretty forgettable black metal band, until they released SMRC. I think there are some stellar moments on this album. I probably still need to listen to it some more, before I can make a better judgement as a whole.

Re: Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat [2022]

It seems the general consensus is that people don't like this album I guess? I enjoy it even though it's a departure from what I would expect, but I don't think it's bad.
